Older Adults’ Fitness

Senior Fitness is at the top of the list at our home care agency in St. Louis . Setting goals to stay in shape as we get older and staying committed to them can create a challenge. If you’re a senior who is planning on making 2010 a healthier year, then it is imperative that you stick to your fitness goals. Here are some ways to help you:

1. Don’t obsess over weight – while an occasional weigh in is okay, don’t step on the scale daily. It takes time to make progress, and it’s important to remember muscle weighs more than fat. If you spend too much time watching the scale, unless you see the exact numbers you’re hoping for, you’re likely to become discouraged

2. Focus on food – food and fitness go hand-in-hand. In order to improve your health, you need to improve your nutrition as well

3. Ease into a routine – you may have big fitness goals, but start slow and ease into a moderate fitness routine. Particularly as you get older, pushing yourself too hard, too fast can be damaging

4. Setup a regimented fitness program – setup a schedule and attend a certain number of weekly classes, or talk to a personal trainer that’s used to working with seniors to help

5. Write down your accomplishments – keeping a fitness diary makes your goals visual and can help to motivate you as you track your progress

6. Take advantage of internet resources – online you can find examples of fitness programs, recipe ideas and more to help you with your new lifestyle
